Origin:

Founded in March 1990 with 33 charter members, of whom 2 are current members of the chapter, The Laurel Chapter membership numbers around 50, and is located in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina.

Meeting Information:

Except for December, meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at the Cummings Memorial Methodist Church in Horse Shoe, about 6 miles from Hendersonville, NC. directions The church is handicap accessible.

Registration is 9:30-10:00 A.M., followed by a short business meeting, and a program. Attendees may participate in the program, or work projects of their own. Show 'n Tell is a featured event at all meetings. Refreshments are served at the regular monthly meetings; many attendees bring lunch and stay through early afternoon to stitch or just visit.

Programs have included: pulled thread and hardanger projects; a blackwork sampler from Needle Arts; a beaded picot edged scissor fob; a Peyote Stitch beaded name tag; canvas frame weight; needle punch; and bargello.

The chapter has hosted 2-day workshops taught by Marion Schoular, Carole Lake, and Debbie Stiehler.

The location of the December holiday lunch varies from year to year. The annual installation of officers takes place at this event, along with an ornament exchange.

Membership:

Regular membership dues are $50 per year, and plural dues are $18 per year.

Guests:

Guests and visitors are welcome to attend 2 meetings and then are asked to become members.

Special Interest Groups:

Groups meet at members' homes, usually beginning at 10 A.M., running through lunch into the early afternoon.

• Beading meets the second Thursday; those attending this group must bead during the meeting.
• Canvas meets the third Thursday, and occasionally has a group study project.
• Work in Process meets the fourth Thursday.

Outreach:

Current outreach activities include an annual "make a blanket" day for Project Linus; stitching in public at the Johnson Farm open house day; and a holiday food drive.

Directions to Cummings Memorial Methodist Church The church is on Banner Farm Road in Horse Shoe, NC.

From Asheville: take exit 40 off I-26, turning west on NC 280 for 6.8 miles to Ray Hill Road. Turn left on to Ray Hill, and follow it for about 2.5 miles until it ends at Brannon Road (having crossed Turnpike Road). Turn left onto Brannon and go a short distance until it ends on Banner Farm Road. Turn right and drive a short distance to the church on the left just before the stop light.

From Hendersonville and Flat Rock: Take US 64 west from Main Street in Hendersonville for 5.8 miles to Horse Shoe. Turn right onto Banner Farm Road, just before the stop light. The church is just there on the right. (Hendersonville is exit 49B off I-26.)

From Pisgah Forest and Brevard: Take US 64 east through Etowah into Horse Shoe. Turn left onto Banner Farm Road at the first stoplight in Horse Shoe. The church is just there on the right.
